Jimsey is our only Border Collie and an absolute joy. He is a very keen worker who will vigorously attack any task, but is also the most cheerful, upbeat dog we've ever known. He has a definite "off switch" and around the house is calm, well-mannered, and sensible. His real love is agility, but he seems to enjoy doing anything you ask of him-- except going slowly. When he's "on task," the only speed that makes sense to him is maximum speed.

As a youngster, Jimsey showed in AKC conformation and is pointed, with reserves to majors. However, while we were giving him time to grow up and fill out, he had two accidents which eventually cost him his four lower front teeth and prompted an upper canine root canal. With no bite for a conformation judge to examine, his breed career is over. His accidents taught us two valuable lessons: 1) Never toss plastic retrieving dummies in sub-freezing temperatures, and 2) Excavate any rocks that a hopeful dog might mistake for a tennis ball at twenty yards.

Jimsey's pedigree contains some well-known obedience dogs. Those lines are known for a more upright style of dog that carry a little more bone than herding lines, as well as a long tail and a high tailset. With Jimsey's "up" attitude, his tail is usually curled over his back (and wagging) when he's alert. When he's concentrating on sheep or waiting for a bumper toss, his tail drops into a more proper position. Nonetheless, we love his expressive tail. Video footage of Jimsey's agility runs often includes him on the start line wagging his tail furiously as Erin walks onto the course for a lead-out.

Jimsey came to us from Laura Kincaid's Oelamp Border Collies. The origin of his name is a long story, but Erin knew she wanted to give him a "Mac" or "Mc" name as a nod to our Flat-Coat Mac. Her favorite from a long list was McJimsey, which also has a connection to our alma mater (Grinnell College). Q.E.D. is a Latin acronym for quod erat demonstrandum ("which was to be demonstrated"), and is sort of the Latin "Voila!" That seemed like the perfect name for a dog we hoped could master any skill.
