Quincy x Ghillie pups
We've decided to breed Ghillie to Quincy on her next season, for what's probably her final litter. Quincy (SR NSDTRC/AKC/Can CH Skylark's Rowdy Riverdancer Am/Can CDX WC) has distinguished himself in the show ring, obedience ring, and at the line in hunt tests, and is a wonderful hunting companion and family pet. Quincy has some of our favorite dogs in his pedigree, and more importantly, is very nice himself, with the kind of balance, angulation, and drive that we want in our Tollers. We're expecting these pups to be good performance and conformation prospects, though these are late-maturing lines who may take a few years to finish filling out.

Our hopes for this litter
Ghillie is light-boned with a racy build, so one of the reasons we chose Quincy is his more moderate size and bone. Both dogs have a similar style of workmanlike balance and wonderful angulation, qualities we want to carry through to our future generations. Quincy also has a good length-to-height ratio, while Ghillie is a little more square than our ideal.

We'd also like to improve a bit on Ghillie's head. Quincy, like his maternal grandfather, has a head that's very close to our image of an ideal Toller head, with good length and breadth of muzzle, good underjaw, proper ear leather, and good ear size. Since Ghillie's family has not historically had ideal ears, we'd especially like to improve upon that legacy.

We think this is a good match for creating Tollers with plenty of energy to tackle any task, but enough of an "off switch" to lie quietly around the house when the fun hasn't started yet. Ghillie likes to work (and especially retrieve!) and is eager to please, but tends to be serious and reserved. Quincy is job-minded too, though he is more outgoing and loves going to dog shows to be adored by his public.

We also feel this litter will have ample field drive-- Quincy's owners are avid hunters, and Quincy takes to the field for pheasant, goose, and duck hunting. Ghillie does not have the opportunity to hunt, but swims and retrieves tirelessly. The combined pedigree of these pups includes some of our breed's best known show/field dogs as well as some "undertitled" dogs who loved hunting but hated the field test rigamarole!

Because no family of purebred dogs is immune to genetic disease, we also examined both pedigrees carefully for health issues. Just as your human family might have a tendency toward hay fever, diabetes, or particular cancers, dog families can have similar weaknesses. We have taken care not to "double up" on the health weaknesses we know of in these two families. It's our hope, belief, and prayer that this match will produce healthy, long-lived Tollers.

More photos of Quincy are available at his webshots album, which is owned by his breeder, Laurie Geyer of Skylark Tollers. Quincy is owned by Jean and Jon Gravning.

We're planning to keep a pup from this litter, which is bred in cooperation with our friend Heather Green (Zephyr Kennel.) For more information, contact us or Zephyr Kennel.
